| The
Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association (JANA) is a publication
that welcomes original research articles, reviews on clinical studies,
book reviews, abstracts, and correspondence from readers. Submitted
manuscripts on original research will be promptly acknowledged and
peer-reviewed by members of the editorial review panel. Authors will
be notified of the publication date. Submitted manuscripts must not
be submitted for publication elsewhere or have been published previously.
Copyright
Upon acceptance of a manuscript for publication, all authors will
be asked to sign an agreement transferring copyright to the publisher,
who reserves copyright. The copyright act of 1976 requires that
all manuscripts submitted for publication be accompanied by the
following statement, signed and dated by all authors:
The undersigned author(s) transfer(s) all copy right
ownership of the manuscript to The Journal of the American Nutraceutical
Association in the event the work is published. The under signed
author(s) warrant(s) that the article is original, is not under
consideration by another journal, and has not been previously published.
No published material may be reproduced elsewhere with out the written
permission of the publisher.
The Guidelines for Contributors to the Journal of
the American Nutraceutical Association are in accordance with the
Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals
appearing in Annals of Internal Medicine 1988; 108:266-273. Reprints
of the full requirements are available on request.
Manuscript Submission
Send the original and three hard copies of the manuscript with one
copy on a 3.5 computer disk (Macintosh or PC format only). Indicate
on the label the type of computer and name of the software program
used to create the file. Mail submission to: Mark C. Houston, M.D.,
Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association,
5120 Selkirk Drive, Suite 100, Birmingham, AL 35242.
- A cover
letter signed by the author(s) should identify the appropriate
address, telephone and fax numbers to which correspondence can
be sent.
- When
a paper originates from or identifies a particular institution,
the author is responsible for securing any necessary authorization
required by that institution prior to submitting the manuscript.
- The
author is responsible for obtaining written permission of persons
who can be identified in any photographs submitted and for obtaining
publisher and author permission for copyrighted materials.
- In
the cover letter the following statement should be included. All
authors have contributed to each of the three activities: 1. Conception/design
and/or analysis/interpretation; 2. Writing; 3. Approval of final
version and acceptance of responsibility for the content of the
paper.
- Authors
must disclose all possible conflicts of interest (e.g., funding
sources for consultancies or studies of products).
- Manuscripts
must be double-spaced, typed on one side of 8.5" x 11"
bond paper, with one-inch margins.
- No
submitted article can exceed 20 typewritten pages, including references.
- Each
submission must be accompanied by an abstract of no more than
200 words.
- References
should begin on a new page, be primarily from the past five years
(unless providing historical information), be limited to those
cited in the text, and be double-spaced.
- Contributors
are responsible for all statements made in their manuscripts and
for obtaining written permission from copyright owners for illustrations
and lengthy quotes.
Illustrations, Figures,
and Drawings
- Illustrations
and lettering must be of professional quality. Drawings should
be black and white and submitted in camera-ready form. Tables
or figures should only be used to clarify material and must be
numbered consecutively in text.
- All
tables and figures should have titles and be easily understood.
Figures should have a short description beneath them summarizing
the salient points.
Citations
- For
Journals: Author(s) last names and initials. Date in parentheses.
Title of article, capitalizing only the first word, proper names,
and abbreviations normally capitalized. Do not use quotation marks.
Underline the full title of the journal and capitalize all key
words. Follow with volume and page numbers.
- For
Books: Author(s) last names and initials. Date in parentheses.
Underline the book title and capitalize only the first word, proper
names, and abbreviations normally capitalized. Do not use quotation
marks. For chapters in books include last name and initial of
editors. City and state of publication, name of publisher, and
page numbers if specifically cited.
Trade Names
- The
use of a trade name is permissible if a generic name is unavailable
to designate the source(s) of material as a foot note to an original
research article.
Authors Responsibilities
- Authors
are responsible for all statements in articles, including changes
approved in edited typescript. The statements and opinions expressed
in published articles are those of the authors. The editors, publisher,
and reviewers disclaim any responsibility for such statements.
Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of statements
made in their manuscripts. All manuscripts are accepted conditionally,
pending author revision of material after peer review. The liaison
author must be available for consultation with the co-editors
to answer questions during the editorial procedure and to approve
edited copy. Changes cannot be made to the copy after the edited
version has been approved.
Notifications Procedure
- Following
editor and editorial board review, the author(s) will be notified
of the disposition of the manuscript.
- All
accepted manuscripts become the permanent property of JANA and
may not be published elsewhere without written permission from
the publisher.
- Manuscripts
not accepted for publication will be returned to the authors only
if a properly sized self-addressed, stamped envelope is included
at time of submission.
- Ten
free reprints are provided to the corresponding author and are
shipped four to six weeks after publication.
Correspondence
- Letters
to the editors about published articles or other topics pertinent
to the journal’s purposes will be published at the discretion
of the editors. Letters submitted for publication should be double-spaced,
marked "For Publication," and signed by all authors.
They are subject to editing for style and length. Revised letters
will be submitted to author(s) for approval.
Reprint Orders
- Reprints
may be ordered from the publisher. Order forms are available upon
request.
